Osseous surgery, also known as periodontal surgery, is one of the most common procedures performed to treat gum disease and restore oral health. During this procedure, small incisions are made around the tooth so that the gum tissue can be gently lifted back. This allows your periodontist to thoroughly remove all plaque and calculus (tartar) from the roots and smooth out any irregularities in the bone caused by infection.
Once the area is cleaned and reshaped, the gum tissue is repositioned closer to the bone for a healthier attachment. Dissolving sutures are then placed, and a protective dressing may be applied around the necks of the teeth to support healing and maintain the new gum-to-tooth relationship. You will typically return in 10–14 days for a follow-up visit to remove any remaining sutures and evaluate your healing progress.
By repositioning the gums closer to the bone, osseous surgery helps reduce or eliminate deep pockets caused by periodontal disease. As a result, the teeth may appear slightly longer, and spaces between them may become more noticeable. In cosmetic dentistry cases or “high smile lines,” additional treatments such as gum grafting, Porcelain Veneers, or Porcelain Crowns can be considered to improve appearance and harmony with your smile.
Patients who undergo osseous surgery often continue with periodontal maintenance visits and regular teeth cleaning or dental cleaning to prevent the return of gum disease. Other complementary procedures—such as crown lengthening, dental implants, bonding for a cracked tooth, or endodontic treatments like an apicoectomy—may also be recommended depending on your specific dental needs.
