In most cases, a root canal treatment is enough to save a tooth with an infected or injured pulp from extraction. However, sometimes this non-surgical procedure alone isn’t sufficient to fully heal the tooth. In such cases, your endodontist may recommend endodontic surgery to address the issue at its source.
Endodontic surgery, such as an Apicoectomy, is often performed to locate fractures, hidden canals, or infections that may not appear on X-rays but continue to cause pain or inflammation. This procedure can also treat damaged root surfaces, nearby bone infections, or other complications that threaten the long-term health of the tooth.
The most common and effective surgical procedure used to save a damaged tooth is an Apicoectomy, also known as a root-end resection.
During an Apicoectomy, a small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and remove the inflamed or infected tissue surrounding the tooth root. The end of the root tip is removed, and a root-end filling is placed to seal the canal and prevent reinfection. Finally, the gum tissue is sutured back into place. Over the next few months, the bone naturally regenerates around the treated root, restoring full function and comfort.
Following surgery, you may experience mild discomfort or swelling as the incision heals. This is completely normal for any surgical dental procedure. Your endodontist will recommend appropriate pain relief medication. If pain persists or worsens, please contact our office for follow-up care.
